WORLD-FAMOUS CHATUCHAK WEEKEND MARKET ON FIRE — A fire hit Chatuchak market on Sunday night (June 2) at around 9.15pm but there were no reports of death. The firefighters have controlled the blaze at around 10.30pm. Bangkok governor Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang said 110 shops in Section 25 and 22, covering an area of 8,000 square metres were damaged by the fire and there were no reports of injuries (previously rescue volunteers said that 30 shops were damaged and 2 persons were injured). The start of the fire was at Gate 1, Section 25 (handicrafts zone), Soi 3/4 of the market. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.An explosion in an electrical transformer inside Chatuchak market could be behind a fire that hit the world-famous emporium on Sunday night, police said on Monday.Pol Maj Gen Ekkachai Boonwisut, commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Division 2, said witnesses saw a spark at a transformer shortly before the blaze at the market.Forensic police and officials of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) are at the scene on Monday to determine the cause of the fire.The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will pay each shop 10,000 baht in compensation and set up makeshift tents for free for them to sell their products for a year, he added.Police taped off the area damaged by the fire for police and MEA officials to conduct an investigation. Bangkok governor Pol Gen Aswin said the probe will be completed in two days.The BMA will not assess the damage until the police investigation is finished and workers from City Hall are allowed to enter the area.

Kejadian tersebut dipercayai berpunca daripada percikan api disebabkan masalah eletrikal kemudian menyambar bahan mudah terbakar lalu api semakin marak sekitar jam 9.30 malam. Kebakaran tersebut berjaya dikawal sekitar jam 10 malam oleh pihak bomba.

Walaubagaimanapun, tiada kemalangan jiwa dilaporkan terlibat dalam kebakaran tersebut dan kerja penyiasatan dijangka akan selesai dalam masa 2 hari. Malah, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) akan memberikan pampasan kepada setiap kedai sebanyak 10,000 Baht (~RM1,331.40) sebagai ganti rugi.

Proses untuk membaik pulih kedai-kedai yang terlibat dengan kebakaran dijangka akan mengambil masa selama setahun dan dalam tempoh itu, peniaga yang terlibat akan diberikan peluang berniaga menggunakan khemah. Ini pastinya berita kurang baik untuk para pelancong dan peniaga.
