RIP Supreme 1994-2020. The sale of Supreme to VF marks a long run of poor choices by the brand. Overproduction, online discounts, weak designs, increased retail price points, wider colorway offerings, lackluster collaborations, massive restocks, and other questionable decisions have all been leading up to this moment: the sale of the entire company. This sale signifies the yawn-inducing, corporate boredom of a brand that was originally destined to be something different. I wonder if the play for Jebbia & Co. was always about getting massively wealthy, but a larger part of me says that this brand slowly slipped away from them and their original desire to create a truly innovative apparel company. What does this mean for me? Well… It was only a matter of time. I wasn’t going to be “The Supreme Guy” forever. Now this doesn’t mean that I’m not posting Supreme anymore. Honestly, I might actually be posting more. Maybe I’ll post about Supreme’s shortcomings and mistakes. Maybe I’ll design my own lookbook of what I wish Supreme was making. Maybe I’ll make a full-length documentary about the brand (something I’ve been wanting to do for a while). I’ll probably keep posting the DIY projects, but who knows after that…maybe I’ll even start posting about my other interests, hobbies and aspirations, letting you in on the REAL me…(heck, my real name isn’t even Eric). But one thing is for sure… while I’ll be retiring the “The Supreme Guy” title, I’m not going anywhere. On the contrary, my voice will only get louder from here. While I’m disappointed with many of the brand’s decisions, I’ll always be rooting for the success of Supreme. And while the “RIP Supreme” take may be an overreaction, I’m certainly worried about the brand’s direction to say the least. Here’s to hoping the next 25 years are as good as the first 25. Here’s to hoping that Supreme surprises me and makes the right moves from here. Finger crossed. Maybe I’m just overreacting. Curious what you guys think.
